Parish of Our Lady of the Assumption

The old medieval church of Santa María became insufficient for a growing population once it ceased to be on the border with the kingdom of Granada. For this reason, Bishop Don Cristóbal de Rojas y Sandoval promoted the construction of a new parish church, which was built next to the old town wall and at the foot of the Castle. Its construction began in 1557 with designs by Hernán Ruiz II and continued until 1598. Successive masters overseeing the construction included Sebastián de Peñarredonda, Hernán Ruiz III, Juan de Ochoa, Juan Aranda Salazar, and Eufrasio López de Rojas, although the last of the Hernán Ruiz was the main master of the works. As was traditional in the region, the parish was conceived as a three-nave building, very spacious and crafted in magnificent ashlar masonry, a plan that is a derivation of the Fernandine or reconquest parishes. Like these, it lacks a transept, and its apse is triple, with the Main Chapel standing out for its spaciousness, although all have a straight end.
